MR. PROSPECTOR 2011 - FIRST PART

The Thoroughbred racing business is a game of stallions. Is in the breeding where most of the money is. You have to keep it, in your mind.

Abram S. Hewitt one time wrote: "Often in the male line of Phalaris (four generations up the top line in Native Dancer's pedigree) have there been instances of horses of less than highest racing class becoming important links in the sire chain". The grey Native Dancer was a top class horse. He won 21 of their 22 starts. But lost the race everyone want the most, the Kentucky Derby. His son,  the chestnut Raise a Native was so brilliant winning his only four races before an injury neglected him to prove if he was capable to handle the most important races from the calendar. But he was considered a top class runner.

With Exclusive Native, from the first crop of Raise a Native, no transposing the distance of a mile, in the stakes races, the suspicion that the sons of Raise a Native could not reach the classic distances was determined, but vanished, when Majestic Prince - a handsome colt, sold by a record price in Keeneland - from his second crop, won the Kentucky Derby.

Raise a Native was a Sire of Sire. Many of his sons were good stallions, but three of them are especial: Exclusive Native, Mr. Prospector and Alydar. All them leading sire. The first in the 1978 and 1979 seasons and his son Affirmed was the main reason. The second won in 1987 and 1988, and the third in 1990. In thirteen years 5 wins. This changed the way many people look for the breeding.

For the last three decades, Mr. Prospector has been recognized as a top class stallion, a sire of sires and a great broodmare sire, but most of the time, only in the true tradition of the North America racing: quickly developing juveniles not very happy in long distances on the grass. This is a stigma very understandable. But at least, three of his sons, are showing capacity to produce top class grass horses, even on the classic distances.  Machiavellian, Seeking the Gold and Gone West.

All them very smart horses, but not smart enough to be considered top class horses, as they proved they can produce.

Gone West was very close to make history, if he had won the Belmont Stakes. It would be the number six to his trainer Woodford "Woody" Cefis  Stephens. But he failed in the test of stamina. Gone West won 6 of his 17 races, but the three most important, the Dwyer (Gr.1), the Withers (Gr.2) and the Gotham (Gr.3), are around a mile and a mile an 1/8. A very good horse, but not a super one.

As a stallion he could produce a Eclipse champion sprinter as Speightstown, a world record holder as Elusive Quality, a dual Breeders Cup Mile winner as Da Hoss, and winners of the Be;mont Stakes and Breeders Cup Turf as Commendable and Johar. They can fit in any distance with any age.

The Gone West's tribe had produced on 2011, 51 individual Group/Graded winners, performing a total of 77 Group/Graded races in 12 different countries. It is a huge result. He did that with the help of eight different branches and accumulated a total of twelve Grade/Group 1 winners. Sepoy in Australia and Dancewiththedevil at South Africa, they have to be considered at the top of their crops.

Seeking the Gold, won 8 from his 15 starts. He was the winner of the Super Derby (G1), Dwyer Stakes (G2) and Peter Pan Stakes (G2) and runner up of the very important graded 1 races as the Breeders Cup Classic to Alysheba,  the Metropolitan Hcp. to Proper Reality, the Travers Stakes Haskell Invitational Hcp. to Forty Niner and the Wood Memorial to Private Terms, produced three top class contenders, Dubai Millennium, on the grass and champions Flanders and Heavenly Prize, on the dirt. He won between a mile and 1/8 and a mile and 1/4.

The Seeking the Gold's tribe had produced on 2011, 31 individual Group/Graded winners, performing a total of 35 Group/Graded races in 13 different countries. Seven Grade/Group 1 winners. Eight different sons.
